Horton took five wickets as the hosts were restricted to 138-8 and top scored with the bat, making 45, only for Holmewood to go down by just three runs in the Derbyshire County League, Third Division clash.

Put into bat on a spicy track, Matlock’s batsmen weathered a period of prodigious movement from Holmewood’s opening bowlers before David Lander (34) counter-attacked with some excellent shots.

The scoring rate barely touched two an over but, having dug in at the start, Matlock were able to cash in their wickets in hand and accelerate their scoring.

Horton took 5-25 in a nine-over spell as second change. His wickets included those of Lander, Mark Burton (23) and Andrew Paulett (21), while Edward Lowe made 23no.

Holmewood’s run-chase got off to a poor start as the home side’s veteran Chris Pemberton struck twice with the new ball before Horton, Luke Slater (37no) and Jamie Horton (20) tipped the game in their favour.

However, number four Slater was left stranded as wickets suddenly tumbled on the return to the Matlock attack of Pemberton, who ended up with 6-35 from 14 overs.
