Wilson: '˜Football can be a cruel game'

Chesterfield manager Danny Wilson branded football a '˜cruel game' after a late goal stretched their winless run to six.

The defence held firm for 86 minutes until substitute Lee Novak scored the only goal of the game.

The former Spireites striker, who bagged 15 goals whilst on loan last term, was on the field just five minutes before breaking the travelling fans’ hearts at the Valley.

“It’s a cruel game at times football, we all know that, but you have to maintain belief,” admitted Wilson.

“The boys can be really gutted about that result.

“We had chances, we had opportunities, but we didn’t take them.

“Whether you deserve the chances or not it doesn’t matter, you’ve just got to take them.”

It is the fourth time a goal in the last five minutes of a game has cost the struggling Spireites points away from home.

“It’s really disappointing [another late goal] and it’s something we do try and work on,” added Wilson.

“You can’t really do anything when that type of thing happens.

“It’s unfortunate, well fortunate for them, that Lee scored the winner.

“That was our only real lapse in concentration in the whole game and it cost us dearly.”

Despite sitting in the relegation zone, Wilson believes his side are just as good as the teams at the top.

“There’s nothing between us and the teams at the top.

“We’re very similar with the teams that are above us and that’s not going to change too much I wouldn’t of thought.

“Maybe the teams with the bigger squads will start to get better as the season progresses but that’s about it.”
