On Friday it was announced that the Premier League is to provide £125m to the Football League and National League to help clubs cope with the impact of the coronavirus.

However, the money is an advance on soliadarity payments, parachute payments and academy grants owed to clubs in August and is not extra funding.

But the cash will still be a welcome short-term boost for clubs with no matchday revenue coming in.

Salford City owner and Sky Sports pundit, Neville, told Sky Sports News: “It's an advance of the money that was coming anyway if you read the wording. It's an advance, but not an increase.

“I'm conflicted in some ways. I'm the owner of a club, but I'm a great supporter of the Premier League.

“The distribution of funds across football needs to be fairer. At this moment it's about football protecting itself and coming out the other side.

“Coming out of this there could be a reset in the way the game looks at itself. When you look at the distribution of wealth, it isn't fair.

“This crisis has put a great strain on the game, the economy and health across the country, but there could be some good outcomes.”

On Friday Premier League shareholders held discussions about how best to respond to Covid-19.

As well as announcing £20m to support the NHS, one of the outcomes was to provide financial support to the EFL and National League.

The Premier League’s statement said: “Discussions took place regarding financial relief for clubs in the short term and while there is no single solution, measures are to be put in place to immediately deal with the impact of falling cash flow.

“Critically, the league unanimously voted to advance funds of £125 million to the EFL and National League as it is aware of the severe difficulties clubs throughout the football pyramid are suffering at this time.”

The National League season is currently suspended indefinitely and there is no date for when the campaign might resume if it is not cancelled.

Chesterfield are in talks with staff and players about being placed on furlough but the process is still ongoing.
