The 25-year-old had signed a loan deal until the end of the season with the Spireites but was recalled after just one week because Magpies goalkeeper Sam Slocombe suffered an injury in training.

There was an immediate recall clause in his deal which meant County could demand him back as long as it was more than 24 hours before a game.

Fitzsimons was recalled on Friday lunchtime and started County’s 2-0 defeat at Dagenham and Redbridge.

It means Town caretaker boss John Pemberton is now looking for another back-up keeper to challenge in-form Shwan Jalal.

"I have got to look for another keeper but it is very difficult to get the one that we want because everyone wants their keeper to come in and play and I can't leave Shwan out at the moment,” Pemberton said.

"That is why I really liked everything about Ross because he wanted to come in and he knew what the situation was.

“He was happy to fight for the position and he was a really good lad and he did great while he was here.

"I have got to go and try and find someone like him with a bit of experience.

"Unless he is top draw I can't put someone in the team because that would be unfair on the goalkeeper that I have got.”

On whether Fitzsimons could re-join Chesterfield at a later date, Pemberton added: "I don't know. Whether they (County) are going to bring one in which will free him I can have that conversation probably next week.

"We could not do anything else but have the 24-hour callback. We just did not think that was going to happen because they have another goalkeeper but they decided not to use him so he has had to go back.

“Whether they have got someone else lined-up, or that they are looking, which then frees him again, I don't know but I have now got to try and get some cover. That is my priority now at the moment.”
