Match report: Heanor Town 2 Teversal 3

A below-par Heanor Town suffered a late defeat as they failed to close the gap on the top four.

After a bright opening few minutes, the Lions found themselves behind against the run of play. Tom Widdowson latched onto a through ball to dink the ball over the returning Joe McCormack to give the visitors the lead.

Things got worse for Heanor when McCormack had to leave the pitch due to injury. With no substitute goalkeeper on the bench, centre-half Max Thornberry donned the gloves for the remainder of the game.

The Lions pushed for an equaliser, with Lewis Weaver and Blaine Hancock having the best chances, but neither could test Louis Pryce in the Teversal goal.

With the game slipping away from Heanor, they found an equaliser with 15 minutes remaining. Substitute Tom Batterham found space on the edge of the penalty area, before seeing his shot deflect off new-signing Matthew Brian and into the back of the net.

There looked to be one winner from here, but makeshift centre-back Nathan Benger’s mistake allowed Lee Naughton time to lob Thornberry to restore Teversal’s lead.

The Lions had to regroup, and after a sustained spell of pressure, thought they had rescued a point late on when full-back Joe Nice’s bending shot from the edge of the area found the top corner.

But defensive frailties came to haunt Heanor again. After failing to clear a cross, the ball fell to Naughton, who won the game for Teversal in stoppage time.
