The goalkeeper was out of contract at the Spireites this summer and so he joins the Iron on a free transfer, effective from July, penning a two-year deal.

His last appearance for the Blues was the play-off final defeat to Notts County on Saturday.

Fitzsimons’ departure, along with Lucas Covolan’s loan expiring, means Town will be looking for a new keeper or two ahead of the new campaign.

He initially joined on a short-term deal at the start of last season but that was extended until the end of the campaign.

After coming in as cover for Covolan, his performances led him to being the number one for the majority of the season, recording 14 clean sheets.

When Covolan came back into the team in February, Fitzsimons almost moved to the Glanford Park club then, but the move has happened now.

He proved to be a steady keeper, but unfortunately his time at Town will probably be remembered by most for his mistake in the play-off final against Notts.

On signing for Scunthorpe, he said: "It was a rollercoaster of a season last year, to be honest with you For me, on a personal level, it was a really good one although disappointing to lose in the play-off final. I hope I can build on the season I had and help us get back to where we need to be.

"I've played at this level a lot of my career and know what the division will bring and the players I'll be up against. I'm excited and can't wait to get going."

The 28-year-old is joined at Scunthorpe by two more Spireites in Will Evans and Tyler Denton.

The Iron were relegated from the National League this season and will be aiming to bounce back at the first opportunity.
