'Always in my heart' - Goalkeeper sends message to Chesterfield fans after leaving for Scunthorpe United

The goalkeeper has left to join Scunthorpe United on a free transfer on a two-year deal after one season at the Spireites.

The 28-year-old’s contract at Town was due to expire this summer so he leaves as a free agent.

His last game for the Blues was the play-off final defeat at Wembley on Saturday. Overall, he recorded 14 clean sheets this campaign.

"Thank you Chesterfield FC, will always be in my heart,” he posted on social media.

“Now the dust has settled from the weekend, the heartache still hasn’t eased that we came so close but unfortunately that’s football sometimes.

“I wanted nothing more than to guide us back to the promised land of the EFL but it wasn’t to be.

“After numerous discussions with the club, unfortunately we couldn’t agree on a deal for me to stay and continue this journey together.

“I would like to thank everyone at the club, from management staff, through to my team-mates, and especially you, the fans. You stood behind us all season through the good and the bad and there’s doubt you will have success in the future.

“My time has come to face a new challenge, but I will always look back on my time here with the fondest of memories. Thank you for everything!”

Chesterfield’s search for a new goalkeeper will now be underway, while Fitzsimons will be hoping to return to the National League at the first attempt with the Iron.
