Woman in her 60s stole statues of pigs and rabbits from gardens and graveyard in Amber Valley

A woman in her 60s who stole garden ornaments including statues of pigs and rabbits from a graveyard in Amber Valley and then sold them at a carboot sale. has dodged jail.

Valerie Taylor, aged 63, of Ryknield Road, Kilburn, appeared at Southern Derby Magistrates’ Court. on December 29, where she pleaded guilty to seven offences of theft.

Between February and April last year, Taylor stole from gardens in Codnor, Holbrook and Horsley Woodhouse and from a churchyard in Horsley.

Amongst the items she stole were statues of a pig and two piglets, two rabbits, planters, two windmills and a garden table and four chairs.

Sergeant Neil Hopwell said: “One family was distraught after a statue of two cherubs on a bench was stolen from the graveyard. It had great sentimental value, and like the other items stolen by Miss Taylor, was sold at a car boot sale.

“Although Miss Taylor showed some remorse for her actions and admitted her guilt some of the things she stole can never be replaced.”

Taylor was given a conditional discharge and ordered to pay hundreds of pounds in compensation.
