The work began yesterday (Friday, September 11) and will continue until Monday morning- and then again on the following two weekends.

Derbyshire County Council say the major road, which runs from Chesterfield and past Dronfield into Sheffield, will be completely resurfaced and relined with crash barriers repaired and maintenance work on the bridges.

The road will be shut off from the Bowshaw roundabout to Sheepbridge roundabout.

Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Infrastructure at Derbyshire County Council, Councillor Simon Spencer, said: “We know that this will cause considerable disturbance to residents while the work is taking place, but think this is preferable to the work lasting for many weeks. We apologise in advance for the disturbance this will cause.

“This is a busy road running through the middle of town and there will always be some noise associated with it.

"But we hope by resurfacing this stretch, it will deal with the more recent noise issues which have arisen since the road was surface dressed last summer and get us back to levels that are comparable with what the road was like before.”

Concerns have already been raised about the diversion in place, which takes motorists through Dronfield and Unstone where roadworks are also in place.

Allan Ogle tweeted: “Who's idea was that? Carnage for the village tonight, added half hour on to the journey.”
