Ripley thug smashed a window with a child’s scooter

Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Friday, October 23, how Jameel Mellor, 19, of Booth Street, Ripley, smashed two panes of the window at the home on Ledo Avenue, in Ripley.

Prosecuting solicitor Becky Allsop said: “The complainant, who is six months’ pregnant, was woken in her home by the sound of males in the street.

“She woke her partner and he shouted at them to keep the noise down and there was an exchange between the complainant’s partner and the males.

“The complainant looked outside and saw the defendant walking up her drive and he picked up a kid’s scooter and threw it but it missed a window of the property but he did it again and it smashed both panes of glass of the window.”

The court heard how a bedroom of the property was left strewn with broken glass including a Moses basket which had been bought for the unborn baby.

Mellor, who told police he had been drunk, pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage after the incident on October 12.

Defence solicitor Fran Lavender said: “The defendant accepts he was noisy in the street and when challenged he acted in a foolish manner and broke the window.

“He is extremely remorseful and describes the incident as a moment of madness.”

Magistrates adjourned the case to consider a probation report before sentencing on October 28.
