Andrew Cooper visited the Tesco superstore in Clowne last Thursday to do some shopping for his elderly parents amid the coronavirus crisis.

Mr Cooper said: “The social distancing guidelines from the UK Government were not being followed by customers or staff.

Mr Cooper – who has complained to Tesco – added: “Having returned from the shambolic store I felt both unclean and unsafe.”

A spokesperson for Tesco said: “We’ve spoken to the store manager who has confirmed that all trolleys are being disinfected and hand sanitiser is available in the store.

“She will be working to ensure that these measures continue so we can protect customers and colleagues.”

However, despite Mr Cooper’s experience, other shoppers have defended the store’s social distancing measures, and praised the hard-working staff.

On the Derbyshire Times’ Facebook page, Joshua Bulheller said: “I went to Tesco Clay Cross today, I can say all the staff we friendly as always.

“I had my trolley sanitised before entry politely welcomed and explained how to queue and pay.”

Marilyn Thomas added: “Tesco staff are doing everything they can to help us. These people would rather be at home with their families but they carry on for us.

“Just be patient and don't give the staff a hard time it's not their fault.

“Thank you you all the staff for what you are doing and stay safe.”

Clare Louise added: “I wish people would stop putting the boot in to these retailers. This situation is a learning curve for everyone, they are trying their best.

“The staff are risking their own health to supply us food. Please be kind to the retail staff, none of this is their fault.”

Antony Broomhall wrote: “Been to Tesco twice and they have been fantastic with the rules. If it wasn't for people like these what goes into work so we can do our shopping life would be so much harder, I take my hat off to all there work staff, you’re doing a wonderful job and thank you.”
