Around 40 volunteers from Transition Chesterfield helped organise the event at the Pavements Shopping Centre, where people buy different varieties of seed potatoes, onion and shallot sets, garlic bulbs, pea and bean seeds.

More than 12,000 seed potatoes were sold on the day and volunteers say a long queue formed ahead of opening time at 10am.

Transition Chesterfield has organised Potato Day in Chesterfield for the last 12 years.

Buyers could also find out about the Monthly Repair Cafe held in Chesterfield, taste potato dishes and take part in a free seed swap.

Several varieties sold out but the surplus is now for sale from Inspire Community Garden in 1kg bags.

All proceeds from the event are split between Transition Chesterfield and the town’s organic Inspire Community Garden.

Chesterfield’s Potato Day also serves as a hub for a similar event in Loughborough and a large order from an allotment group in Derbyshire’s Hope Valley,

Last year, Transition Chesterfield called for volunteers to come forward and a 'Save Potato Day' meeting was organised.
