Local trumpeter and retired international educator, John-Charles Tanner, organised the well-supported and socially-distanced commemorative events at the war memorial in Hasland’s Eastwood Park on Saturday.

The Last Post was played and there was a two-minute silence at 11am to honour all the servicemen and women who fought in the Far East campaign, often referred to as ‘the Forgotten Army’.

There was another meeting at the war memorial in the evening when Sunset was played to mark the end of the Second World War 75 years ago.

Mr Tanner thanked those who attended and made the event possible.

He added: “VJ veterans and their families are not and never will be forgotten.”

VJ Day marked the day that Japan surrendered on August 15, 1945, which ended the Second World War.
