Free parking set to boost trade in the Dales

FOR the fifth year running, the district council is encouraging people to shop locally this Christmas by introducing free parking throughout the Dales.

As of Saturday, December 1, it will be free to park in any Derbyshire Dales District Council car park after 2pm.

The free parking scheme was launched in 2008 to help residents and businesses during the economic recession and, owing to its success, has become a permanent fixture in the Dales’ festive calender.

Cllr Lewis Rose said: “While car parking income is vital in supporting the services we provide for people in the Dales, we want to do everything possible to encourage people to shop locally.”

Free parking from 2pm comes on top of residents’ parking concessions which allow local people to park free every day of the year up to 11am and after 4pm.

So, over the Christmas period Dales residents will have free parking for 21 hours each day – before 11am and after 2pm.

The free parking will extend until midnight each day and the district council warns motorists not to leave anything valuable in their vehicles as the lead up to Christmas can also be a choice time for thieves.
