Police to hand out more personal safety alarms following assaults in Shirebrook

Police are handing out personal safety alarms to residents in Shirebrook again today, as investigations continue into the assault of two women in the town.

Officers started giving out the devices and other safety items to people at The Salvation Army, on Patchwork Row, at around 9am this morning (Friday, July 9).

The team carried out similar action last Sunday (July 4), afterwhich they apologised for having a limited amount of alarms and said they had more on order.

It comes as officers have increased patrols in the area following reports that a 49-year-old woman had been assaulted in a field off Main Street at around 8pm on Thursday, July 1.

The victim who was taken to hospital, has now been released after she told police that she was injured by two men that then fled from the scene.

Police spoke to a second woman who also reported to officers that she had been assaulted close to the junction of Carter Lane and The Rocklands in the early hours of Sunday, June 27.

Derbyshire police said there is currently no information to link the two incident and continue to appeal for witnesses to come forward with information.

In a post on Facebook, Shirebrook Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) said they will make further announcements throughout the day today to let residents know further times and locations.

The force said: “We are pleased to announce that we have secured more personal alarms and we will be around Shirebrook today handing them out.

“In the spirit of partnership working we will be joined by the CAN Rangers from Bolsover District Council.

“All of the items we are handing out are provided by the Community Safety Partnership which includes the Police and Bolsover District Council.

“We look forward to chatting to as many of you as possible. We will start near to the Salvation Army at around 9am and then we will make further announcements throughout the day to let you know further times and locations.

“Don't worry if you don't manage to see us today because more will be available for collection from the Town Council Office.”
