‘Large groups of youths’ deliberately setting fires in Clay Cross

Large groups of youths have been starting fires deliberately in the Clay Cross area, according to police.

Shortly before 8pm on Thursday, firefighters were called to a blaze at Sharley Park.

A spokesperson for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “This was a fire in the woodlands extinguished using water back packs.

“Derbyshire police were informed and in attendance due to the large number of fires happening in this area.”

A spokesperson for Clay Cross Police Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “There have been more incidents regarding large groups of youths deliberately starting fires in woods, mainly in Sharley Park.

“If you see anything regarding this, please keep reporting via 999, 101 or FireStoppers.”

Commenting on this issue on Facebook, one woman said: “Totally unnecessary work for you – what if an emergency crops up?

“They do it because they can, and they don’t give a damn about the consequences.

“I feel sorry for the whole team having to deal with this.”
