Inquest opens into death of Chesterfield woman following fatal collision on A61 Derby Road

An inquest has opened into the death of a 60-year-old Chesterfield woman who died after being hit by a car at a pedestrian crossing.

Ann McTighe, of St Augustines Crescent, died following a collision with a black Fiat Panda on 6 January on Derby Road at the pedestrian crossing close to the junction with Redvers Buller Road.

A 23-year-old man who was arrested at the scene remains on police bail as enquiries into the crash continue.

Detective Staff Investigator Jessie Merrett, who is investigating the case, told a hearing at Chesterfield Coroners Court on 27 January Ann was pronounced dead at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield between 7.10 and 7.15pm that evening.

She said: “She was identified at the hospital by her husband, Ian.

"He was able to visit her at hospital before she passed away and he has provided a statement to confirm her identification.”

The inquest heard Ann worked as a cleaner and a support worker at a care home.

A post-mortem, held on 13 January, was unable to ascertain the precise medical cause of her death.

Sarah Huntbach, assistant coroner for Derby and Derbyshire, said: "This inquest will now be adjourned to allow further investigations to be undertaken. Those investigations will include ascertaining the circumstances that led to her cause of death.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank both the investigating officer for coming along to give this evidence to the court, and also to offer my condolences to Ann’s family at this very sad time.”
