CO-OP CONVERSION: £20million work to revitalise Chesterfield landmark to start imminently

Multi-million pound work to transform Chesterfield's landmark Co-op store into a hotel and leisure hub is set to start '˜in the not-too-distant future', developers say.

The announcement comes after Chesterfield Borough Council conditionally approved a planning application to convert the former Co-op department store on Elder Way into a hotel, restaurant and fitness centre.

Central England Co-operative, which still owns the site, is working with Jomast Developments Ltd to transform the landmark – while still retaining many of its original features.

They aim to complete the ambitious £20million project over an 18-month period.

The application includes an 89-bedroom budget hotel on the upper floor, six family restaurants on the ground floor and a health and fitness area in the basement.

Adam Hearld, development director at Jomast Developments Ltd, said: “Talks are at a fairly advanced stage with a number of businesses to occupy the hotel, restaurants and health and fitness area. We can’t yet reveal who we’re talking to as discussions are ongoing.

“We’re also working on a scheme to improve the public realm of that area.

“When both these elements are complete, we’ll be starting work.

“We can’t yet say exactly when this will be – but it’ll be in the not-too-distant future.

Work will take place over an 18-month period,” he added.

The prominent Co-op building has remained empty since the department store closed down in July 2013.

Mr Hearld added: “This is a hugely important and exciting opportunity to revitalise a significant landmark building and create a vibrant leisure destination in the heart of Chesterfield town centre.”

He promised to keep the Derbyshire Times up-to-date on developments.
