Digance heads the folk line-up

THE Fay Hield Trio will kick off a bumper season of quality folk music when they put in an appearance at Nottingham Playhouse on Thursday, January 12.

The celebrated folk singer will perform in the Playroom with her colleagues Rob Harbron and Sam Sweeney, present ing a spicy stew of songs and ballads, catches and caprices. The gig gets under way at 8pm and tickets are £10.

Andy Whittle will be the next folk visitor to the Playroom on Thursday, February 9.

Hailing from Nottingham, he possesses a natural gift for melody and strong, emotive lyrics.

Just 24 hours later, firm folk favourite and veteran funnyman Richard Digance brings his guitar and his treasure chest of winning stories and anecdotes to the Playhouse.

The award-winning folk entertainer has travelled the world as a performer for the last 40 years and his brilliant, self-penned comic songs provide an endearing, quirky commentary on life. Tickets are £12 (£10 concessions).

Winners of the Best Live Act at BBC Radio Two’s 2009 Folk Awards, The Demon Barber Roadshow will be performing there on Saturday, February 25, from 7.45pm.

Youthful, enthralling, charismatic and with bags of attitude, The Demon Barbers combine solid traditional acoustic instruments and songs with added oomph.

They will team up for this concert with some of England’s most exciting young traditional dancers to create a high energy music and dance spectacular.

Tickets are £15 (£13 concessions).

Harmonica star Will Pound and banjo ace Dan Walsh are the visitors on Thursday, March 8. They have gained rave reviews across the UK for their electrifying performances so prepare to be astonished by stunning vocals, banjo wizardry and sounds you didn’t think were possible on harmonica. Tickets cost £10.

Ruth Notman is in the Playroom on Thursday, April 19, giving you a chance to hear the Nottinghamshire singer/songwriter, who was a BBC Radio Two Young Folk Award finalist, in action. Tickets are £10.
