Artists of all ages and abilities will be encouraged to paint Buxton during May and June this year for an annual competition.
The Buxton Spa Prize which was launched in 2014 aims to raise the profile of artists and their work and further enhance Buxton’s national reputation as a centre for arts and culture.
More than 100 artists entered the prize last year, double the amount from year one of the competition which is generating national interest.
Inspired by similar competitions in Bath and Bristol, The Buxton Spa Prize has a Children’s Prize, 11 – 17 year old Buxton Spa Teen Prize and an open category with a first prize of £5,000 from the Trevor OsborneCharitable Trust and second and third cash prize. The sketchbook prize which generated great interest in the past two years, will be repeated this year with a cash prize of £2,000.
The prize judges include renowned Salford artist Harold Riley, leading UK ‘en plein air’ artists Ken Howard RA OBE and Pete ‘The Street ‘ Brown and chairman of Visit England, Penelope, Viscountess Cobham CBE.
Artists can register to enter online from April 1 until May 15. They will be required to visit Buxton from May 6 to 15 to draw one of 40 locations by ballot and have their board or canvas stamped. The deadline for submissions is June 24. A selection of entries will be showcased at The Green Man Gallery in Buxton from July 1 to August 14.
