Plenty to do at Quad this summer

Derby arts centre Quad is offering a host of activities for families and young people over the summer holidays – and most of them are free.

These include SummersQUAD traditional arts and craft workshops and storytelling sessions in Quad Gallery. Quad also launches new Digital Days Out for Families.

SummersQUAD are a series of free fun and family friendly workshops, designed to link in with Quad’s summer exhibition and suitable for families with children aged five and above.

SummersQUAD free family workshops will take place on Friday, August 10 from 10am to 12noon; Monday, August 13 from 1.30pm to 3.30pm and Friday, August 17 from 10am to 12noon. Places are limited and will be available to book through the Quad box office in July.

An additional Drop-in SummersQUAD sessions takes place on Saturday, August 11, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm, offering a chance to make something simpler and places do not need to be booked. For more information please contact

Fun for all ages, the ancient art of storytelling will captivate and inspire with Free Storytelling workshops taking place in Quad Gallery in August and September. Led by Jen Sumner (Story Moves and Maison Foo) and Rachel Murray (Storytelling Café) each session will be lasting approximately one hour.

The Storytelling workshops take place on Saturday, August 11 at 2:30pm; Wednesday, August 15 at 2:30pm; Wednesday, August 29 at 2:30pm; Saturday, September 1 at 2:30pm and Saturday, September 15 at 2:30pm. A grand finalé, From Failure to Triumph, takes place on Wednesday, September 26 at 7pm. Places need to be booked through Quad’s box office.

Digital Days Out are a chance for the family to work together to create digital artwork. There are three different sessions; Animation, Green Screen Movies and Fantastical Family Portraits will include advice and software to setup at home.

Animation on Tuesday, August 21, will help you to develop a story as a 2D animation using computer software and sound recording to bring your story to life. DVD copies will be provided to take away. In Green Screen Movies, on Thursday, August 23, participants can go on a virtual adventure through time and space, to create a video using software, ‘green screens’ and photography. Please bring any additional props you may want to use.

Fantastical Family Portraits, on Tuesday, August 28, offers an opportunity to create a family portrait with a difference. Turn yourselves into a family of zombies, wizards, robots using images and photo manipulation software. Digital Days Out workshops take place between 10am and 3pm with a break for lunch and the cost is £65 per family group of up to five people,including at least one adult. KidsQUAD: Accidental Art is a mixed media journey through fun and unusual art exercises to create your own piece of Accidental Art. Anything could happen! KidsQUAD: Accidental Art takes place on Thursday, August 30 and Friday, August 31, 10.30am to 12.30pm. The cost is £20 for both sessions.
