Sunday side stay top of the table

Newstead Abbey & Village (4pts) 103 all out [31.3 overs] (P Collins 38*) lost to Langley Mill Utd (20pts) 130 all out [34 overs] (J Salmons 33, C Curtis 4-21, J Bentley 3-43) by 27 runs

LANGLEY Mill’s Sunday side made a first ever visit to the at tractive surroundings of Newstead Abbey and came back with a 27 run victory in a low scoring encounter.

On a difficult batting track, the Millers totalled 130 all out in 34 overs and dismissed the Abbey for just 103 in 31.3 overs, the win keeping them top of the table.

Langley Mill’s knock included 33 from Jamie Salmons and 25 from Andy Sibley, the pair putting on 50 for the first wicket. From here, the innings fell apart and tight bowling from Chris Curtis (4 for 21) Joe Bentley (3 for 43) and Neil Atkin (2 for 23) restricted the visitors to a below-par score.

Newstead’s ten-man team started well enough but struggled against the young Millers bowling attack. Only skipper Phil Collins with an unbeaten 38 put up any real resistance and the hosts never looked likely to reach their meagre target.

For Langley Mill, Ryan Brunelleschi took 2 for 11, Kyle Barton 2 for 16 and Dave Farnsworth 2 for 24. Salmons and Jay Holmes picked up a wicket apiece.
