Ripley are knocked out of cup after extra time

Ripley Town 3

Ashbourne 5

For the second week running, Ripley squandered the lead to be forced into extra time in a cup game.

But unlike last week, Town crashed out this time around, as Ashbourne proved too strong in this Derbyshire Divisional Cup (South) Second Round game.

Ashbourne dominated large parts of the game and missed the chance to take the lead as Ian Randall brilliantly turned a penalty onto the crossbar.

It was Ripley who went ahead on the half hour when Jay Harrison, making his first start of the season since resigning, robbed the visitors’ full back, easily rounded the keeper and slotted home.

The second half followed the same pattern, Ashbourne enjoying lots of possesion but Ripley scoring first as Harrison crossed for Liam Brown to guide home.

The visitors threw men forward and, just as it seemed town were home and dry, two goals in the last five minutes forced extra time.

This late rally rocked the home side and they soon found themselves 4-2 down.

Joe Smith pulled one back with a stunning volley but it wasn’t enough as Ashbourne had the last word to end the game as worthy 5- 3 winners after extra-time.

Ripley return to Midlands Regional Alliance league action this week, at home to Tibshelf (2pm kick off).
