Belper Meadows 1sts were closing in on a nailbiting victory on Saturday in Division Two of the Derbyshire County League when the rain intervened.

To be fair to Meadows’ opponents Aston-on-Trent, they too were not far from victory although the odds probably favoured the Belper side.

Meadows batted first, looking to bounce back from the previous week’s eight-wicket defeat at the hands of local rivals Ambergate.

Belper were eventually dismissed for 144 in 42.2 overs, in the face of some testing bowling from Aston, for whom Aslam took figures of 5-25, including a hat-trick.

Buckley top-scored for Belper Meadows with 39.

In reply, Wozniczka-Wells and Jones led the way with the ball for Meadows, recording fine figures of 3-37 and 4-40 respectively as Aston found the going tough as they looked to proceed towards their victory target of 145.

Aston had made it to 132-9, within 13 runs of victory and with Meadows requiring just one more wicket to claim the win, when the rain came and the match was abandoned.

Belper Meadows took 12 points from the game and Aston-on-Trent 13.

As for the 2nds, they lost to South Wingfield by seven wickets in Division 5N.

Batting first, they were dismissed for 66 in 32.4 overs.

South Wingfield then replied with a match-winning 68-3.

The 3rds made 239-5 against Holmewood in Division 8N. The rain cut the reply short at 67-1.
