With the ongoing Winter Olympics in Sochi catching the attention of sports fans of all ages, Amber Valley School Sport Partnership has given local schools the chance to experience some of their own Winter Olympics sports.
The partnership, supported by AMG Wealth Management, has brought Jor’dan McIntosh, 22, into schools in the borough to deliver workshops to promote the games.
Wearing the coveted GB kit, the slider from Derby has talked to the students about her career in the GB development squad.
Students got to ‘experience’ what it is like to slide head first and downhill at speeds close to 80 mph via a Go Pro video filmed on a training run for the BBC.
In addition, students have had the chance to ride on the sledge that propels Jor’dan downhill and also wear the incredibly thin skin suit needed for racing.
Among the schools she visited was Marlpool Infant School.
A spokesperson for the school said: “This has been a fantastic opportunity for the students to meet an athlete involved with a sport they can see on the television during the Winter Olympics.
“We have been inspired and are really looking forward to our themed lessons on Sochi.”
Phil Basterfield from Amber Valley School Sport Partnership added: “Jor’dan is a superb advocate and such a good role model.
“Her time with students will hopefully encourage more to become physically active and try new activities.
“I do hope that in a couple of years we can welcome Jor’dan back to show off an Olympic medal of her own!”
Jor’dan McIntosh said: “Working with young children has been so much fun.
“They really responded well and enjoy trying on all of my kit and equipment!
“I hope that I have inspired some to watch the Olympics, try new sports and create their own dreams!”
