Two through to Birmingham

LAST weekend saw a great start to the New Year with Ripley Running Club taking part in the Derbyshire Athletic Association Cross Country Championships at Markeaton Park.

Two of Ripley’s finest got through to the Inter-county Championships which will take place at Birmingham in March.

The Senior Ladies were first up round the 7.5km circuit which consisted of a short loop followed by two large loops of the circuit. The rain held off but the winds were a challenge making the course extremely hard work particularly through the deep mud. The rough terrain coupled with the hills made it hard going

Finishing sixth and securing her place at Birmingham was Lucy Holmes putting in a flying performance finishing the route in 32 minutes and 16 seconds. Also securing a place in the reserve team, Caroline Moss put in a fine performance finishing 15th in 35 minutes 43 seconds.

The Senior mens race was next with the men doing a 10km course which consisted of 3 large loops of the circuit. Matt Bickerstaff put in a great performance up against the best in the County finishing in 10th place in a fantastic time of 36 minutes and 38 seconds. Matt secures his place at Birmingham. Next home was Dean Taylor finishing in 15th place in 37 minutes 54 seconds and takes his place on the reserve team.

Team Ripley for the ladies was Cathy Cresswell finishing in 37:16, Jo Howett 37:25, Eleanor Robinson 39:58 and Paula Brudenell 40:25.

The men were Matt Jones 38:32, Stephen Broughton 42:42, Richard Phillis 43:06, Mark Tomlinson 44:01, Simon English 44:36, Jeremy Bateman 46:41 and Carl Hopkinson 47:59.

There were great performances from all runners.

New Year Hangover

To start New Year, some Ripley Runners decided to opt for the Dentons Hangover five-miler New Year’s day race.

It was a very windy day and hammering it down with rain. Some runners were probably nursing mighty hangovers too but still managed to pull some great results out the bag.

The mighty Matt Jones finished 12th in 32 minutes and 14 seconds. Steve Broughton was 27th in 36.07, Simon English was 28th in 36.12 and in 84th place was Jay Bird in 44.12. 121 runners took part.
