TWO of Ripley’s brave runners recently took part in the mighty Dovedale Dash!
The event is a cross country race of four-and-three-quarter-miles, run by around 1500 people of all abilities.
The venue is the picturesque area around the village of Thorpe and Dovedale in the south of the Derbyshire Peak District.
Stephen Broughton and Michael Corrigan took part in this grueller to start the week off with Stephen finishing in 37 minutes 10 seconds taking 190th place. Mike was not too far behind finishing in just over 40 minutes.
This was impressive stuff from two of Ripley’s newest recruits.
Last Sunday saw the second race of the Booth Decorators Cross Country season take place round the grounds of Chaddesden Park at Derby.
This has to be one of the toughest routes with four water crossings to encounter as part of the 4.4-mile route.
The route also takes in some paths through the woods and some very boggy areas – a guaranteed mud bath at the end!
Undaunted by the undulating course, 24 Ripley members put in a fantastic effort.
The first three men back for the club were Matt Bickerstaff in an outstanding seventh position finishing in just 24 minutes 32 seconds. Next was Dean Taylor in 25 minutes 45 and closely followed by Matt Jones in 27 minutes 05.
Putting in fantastic effort were the rest of the Ripley men including; Gary Brown 27:25, Richard Phillis 27:59, Wayne Smithurst 28:12, Mark Tomlinson 28:16, Mark Walker 28:24, Steve Broughton 28:44, Simon English 29:34, Martin Picker 29:54, Karl Teitz 30:04, Jerry Bateman 31:04, Bill Powis 32:24, Karl Hopkinson 32:39, Lee Palfreyman 33:12, Mike Corrigan 34:47 and Rob Swift 36:31.
The ladies put in a fine performance as always with Lucy Holmes first home and second lady in a superb time of 27 minutes 39 seconds.
Caroline Moss finished 10th lady in a great time of 29 minutes 53 seconds and not far on her heels Cathy Cresswell finished 15th in 32 minutes, getting better every race. Cathy was also first V40 lady!
The ladies team also included Paula Brudenell in 32:44, Claire Duffin 35:12 and Antoinette Franco in 41:07.f
Points overall on the day put Ripley Men in fourth place and Ripley Ladies in a fantastic second place.
The combined, Ripley Running Club finished fourth.
However, it is only the second race of the season.
After two races, Ripley Ladies are in second place - a fantastic result and one that they hope to continue.
Ripley men are currently in fifth, but with some awesome results from the top runners, this is surely to be bettered by the end of the season. Combined, Ripley is in third place – again room for manoeuvre and who knows – a first place in sight this season?
