Selston’s Molly Renshaw will be flying the local flag at the 20th Commonwealth Games this weekend. Competitive action at the eagerly-awaited sports extravaganza gets under way today (Thursday). The games will feature 6,500 athletes and officials from 71 countries who will compete in 17 sports spread over 11 days, finishing on August 3. Molly, 18, who has swam for Ripley RASCALS and Derventio eXcel now trains at Loughborough University. She is in action on Saturday in the women’s 200 metres breaststroke categoryMolly missed out on the London Olympics in 2012 by the narrowest of margins but will be hoping to do well in the Commonwealth Games, where she will resume her battle in Glasgow with fellow England swimmer Sophie Taylor. The pair jointly hold the record for the fastest English 200m breaststroke swimmer. Also competing in the games will be highly-rated Derby-based weightlifter Chris Freebury, who trains at Alfreton’s Atlas Gym. He will representing England in the 69kg weightlifting category at what will be his second Commonwealth Games. He previously appeared at the 19th Games, which were held in Delhi four years ago.
