Ladies lead the way

HEANOR Running Club senior women claimed the 2012 Derbyshire Cross Country Championships team title last weekend as the trio of Glenda Alton, Wendy Mullineux and Laura Harvey led the way in another successful championship for the yellow and blue.

The championships saw three Heanor RC individual medallists and numerous others qualify for the Inter-counties final to be held at Cofton Park, Birmingham on March 10.

The Derbyshire event was held once again in conjunction with the Nottinghamshire Championships at Markeaton Park.

Lining up in the first event of the day were Lily Winfield and Ellie Baker in the U11G 1500m race.

In her first ever championships Lily managed to take home the bronze medal, a mere five seconds behind the eventual winner.

Lily was closely followed by Ellie Baker who crossed the line a further six seconds back in an impressive fourth place.

In the U13 boys event debutant Jack Saxton had an impressive race, coming in 4th place whilst gaining some invaluable racing experience to take into the Inter-counties final.

Likewise for Emily Deeming in the U13 girls race, Emily ran a solid race to claim 5th spot and continues to improve and gain confidence.

After her silver medal at Wollaton Park in last year’s U13G championships, Milly Newton lined up this time in the penultimate event of the day and the U15G four kilometre event. In the lower end and with a year to go at this age category, Milly continued her impressive progress in securing fourth in a time of 14:37 and her place on the Derbyshire team.

In the SL 8km event, Glenda Alton (34:31) led the senior team home to a decisive victory over nearest rivals Long Eaton RC.

The senior women continued the same fantastic collective vein of form that has seen them march to the top of the Booth Decorators League standings and with Wendy Mullineux (34:41) and Laura Harvey (35:01) packing closely behind the result saw Heanor RC take home the county title.

Illness, injury and unavailability contributed to the lack of senior men from Heanor RC as they took to the mud in the 9.6K event but the three that competed each put in strong individual performances.

Ashley Deeming (35:59) had a storming run to finish sixth overall. Not only did Ashley comfortably make the team for the final but he was also rewarded with the silver medal and second VM40 for his efforts.

Darren Ridout (38:22) was 10th senior and 17th overall whilst 2011 Heanor RC Most Improved runner Ed Godber (41:49) completed the trio’s efforts in 36th.

This weekend sees a cross country double-header for Heanor RC as the final North Midlands Cross Country League fixture of the season takes place at Wollaton Park, Nottingham on Saturday (14/01) followed by the fourth instalment of the Booth Decorators League Cross Country the next day (15/01) on home-turf at Shipley Hall Cricket Club 11am start.
