Amber Valley Hornets suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Burton 2nds in a crucial game on Saturday.
At the start of the day, both the Hornets and Burton were level on points at the top of Derbyshire League Division One, along with Staveley.
With the final games to be played the following weekend, a good result was crucial in the race for the league title.
Burton settled the quicker of the two sides and opened the scoring early in the half with a thunderous shot following a good individual run.
They then extended their lead with another good shot before finishing the half on a high by adding a third.
The Hornets were working hard to contain Burton but although they had chances of their own, particularly a reverse stick shot from close range from Jayne Notman, the Burton defence held firm.
The second half saw the Hornets finally settle into some good passages of play with Lynn Creswell taking more control in the centre of midfield.
Emily Hall and Bev Allan were working the wings well on either side of the pitch, but it was Burton again who added another goal to put the game out of the Hornets reach.
For the second week running, the game ended with a late penalty corner to the Hornets that saw Sarah Joyce scramble the ball home for a late consolation goal with the season
