A team of young RASCALS swimmers aged 9-11 years competed recently at the Matlock Novice Gala.
For many of them from the Ripley-based swimming club, this was their first taste of competitive swimming, and they did themselves proud with some excellent performances.
The team finished in second place overall behind Matlock A, beating teams from Rykneld and Derby Phoenix.
There were wins for Tommy Austin and Joel Tannahill in the 10-year-old boys 50m backstroke, Gracie Dawes and Freya Layton in the 10-year-old girls 50m butterfly, Joshua Wheeler in the 11-year-olds 50m backstroke, and Charlotte Middup in the 11-year-old girls 50m butterfly.
In addition, there were wins in the relay events for three of the teams representing the club. Overall, there were an amazing 38 personal best times from 44 individual swims. Oliver Coyle, Benjamin Marsh, Liam Dawson, Poppy Greenwood, Eleanor Grainger, Megan Crompton, Ruby Haslam, Tommy Austin, Joel Tannahill, Gilbert Li, Kyle Charlton, William Steeples, Benjamin Holmes, Grace Lincoln, Rosie Greenwood, Gracie Dawes, Freya Layton, Martha Atkin, Hollie Young, Adam Dadley-Webb, Joshua Wheeler, Sam Marsh, Morgan Buxton, Ben Richards, Thea Bednall and Bethany Booth all posted personal bests.
