Gold joy for Niamh in the 800 metres

Day Two at Sheffield (see left for more) also brought a middle distance gold medal for Amber Valley and Erewash AC, this time for Niamh Emerson in the U15 girls 800m.

She qualified for the final with the fastest time in the heats, as did Tamsin McGraw, sneaking through to a place in the final in her first ever indoor race.

In an intelligently-run race, Niamh kept near the front of the pack, covered any breaks and finally hit the front with a purpose before the bell.

She was able to hold off late challenges, as she crossed the line arms aloft in celebration. Tamsin gained great indoor race experience, finishing a creditable fifth.

Shortly after this, the senior women’s 800m final saw Alex Turner, who coincidentally holds the Northern record for Niamh’s under 15s race, attempt to bring another medal AVEAC’s way. In the end, she finished fifth.
