Amber Valley & Erewash Athletics Club stormed to victory on Saturday at the final match in the Derbyshire AA Track and Field Mini League.

Making it four wins out of four matches, the club was the easy winner overall, taking the trophy for the first time since 2008.

The club was able to round off a successful season in the league, designed for 9-15 year olds of all abilities and standards, and had a consistently high turnout of athletes across all matches. Chesterfield and District AC came second, with Derby AC third.

Athlete of the Match awards were also presented for performances across the season with Emily Coope, Megan Bruce and Jethro McGraw rewarded for outstanding efforts.

The club’s young middle distance runners were in fine form. With just the 1500m on offer, Omar Aikman and Tamsin McGraw had easy wins in the under 13s age group, while Niamh Emerson and Jethro McGraw took the under 15s races, Jethro running against the clock yet again to break the league record by a staggering 15 seconds.

Fran Higton won the under 11s boys 600m, showing great promise for the future.

There were wins in the jump events for Esme Moss at under 11s long jump, Megan Bruce at under 15s long jump, Henry Knighton under 11s high jump, and Maisie Knighton under 13s high jump.

Emily Coope doubled up to win both the 100m and 200m for under 13 girls while George Dave was an easy winner of the under 13s boys 75m hurdles.

Georgina Trace took the under 15s girls shot win, while in the younger age group, Jessie Brown and Louis Teasdale threw the under 11s howler javelin for maximum points.

The club is hosting Try Athletics sessions to cater for interest generated by the Olympics. Special sessions are being run on Wednesdays, August 15, 22 and 29, at the club’s training base at the Rutland Sports Park, Ilkeston.

The free sessions are open to 8-15 year olds. No experience or special equipment is required. Just turn up for a 7pm start. See for more details.
