A local kickboxing club has recorded another historic first, delivering its youngest Black Belt student.

Liam Atkins, 14, of Ripley, successfully completed a gruelling four-hour exam at the kickboxing association’s headquarters at Temple Gym in Birmingham, after joining the Amber Valley Kickboxing club based at Heanor’s William Gregg Leisure Centre as one of the founding students.

Instructor Neil Fletcher said: “I am immensely proud of Liam, this is a fantastic achievement and is testament to Liam’s skill as a martial artist and the determination he puts into his training despite his young years.

“This belt is very well deserved and it has been great to see one of my original students who kicked off the club reach this level”.
