Amber Valley and Erewash AC athletes bagged two golds and a silver at the Northern Athletics Indoor Championships in Sheffield at the weekend.
First up Jessica Turner had a gutsy run in the junior womens 400m to take her first ever Northern indoor title.
Having recorded the second fastest time in the heats earlier on in the day she ran an intelligent race, tracking the leader over one and a half laps.
Choosing her moment to attack, coming off the final bend with 60m to go, she kicked hard to overtake the leader, crossing the line in 56.81, the second fastest time by an under20 so far this season and an outright personal best by one second.
Twenty minutes later, Emily Coope was in action in the final of the U15 girls 60m. In her first season as an U15 and her first Northern Championships she grabbed fourth place by one 100th of a second.
Jethro McGraw went into the under17 mens 1500m with no expectations, being his first outing at 1500m on an indoor track.
The eventual race winner struck out on his own for almost the entire race, and no other athlete was prepared to challenge.
The interesting race was for the other medals and, with a lap to go, Jethro forged ahead with a devastating turn of speed that the remaining pack could not keep up with. In the end, it was only a three second gap between the winner and second-placed Jethro.
