Confident Amber Valley Spartans blew Chilwell Comets out of the sky on their way to a convincing 85-51 victory in the Sherwood Basketball League.
After a comfortable cup victory the previous week against Second Division side, Racing Noel Baker, Spartans opened up the first home court action of 2016 with their fourth clash against Comets already this season. And this encounter went the same way as the other three, giving the home side a perfect tonic in the second of three group matches in the early stages of the league cup.
Spartans were in command from the off, applying suffocating defensive pressure that forced the Comets into bad shots and turnovers. Consistent long-range shooting by player/coach Kyle Henderson, who ended up with 21 points after connecting with seven three-point attempts, soon saw his side build a healthy lead.
Strong inside play by Mark Woodhouse, who scored 20 points, and Ben Brown, who scored 13, was also a feature of Spartans’ display, while relentless defensive hustle by Richard Snow helped create numerous fast-break opportunities for Michael Henry, who scored ten points.
Spartans complete their group games at home to Redhill Rockets tomorrow night (Friday).
