Millers crash out of Trophy

Clifton 77 for 1 (M Wilson 31*) beat Langley Mill 72 all out (W Harvey 4 for 3)

Langley Mill’s first team travelled to high-flying Clifton of Division 1 in the second round of the Marstons Smooth Trophy on a warm Sunday afternoon.

Several changes from the team that drew against Denby on Saturday with a view to ‘blooding’ a few of the second team.

Rich Davey won the toss and elected to bat. Paul Bailey and Lewis Pinder opened up and started very cautiously against the dangerous swing bowling of Cambell Ogilvie and Alex Wooliscroft.

Skipper Ogilvie struck twice in as many overs, firstly removing Pinder for 3 and then bowling Bailey for 18.

Not long after Andrew Ball and Jay Holmes fell to the bowling of W Wilson to leave the Millers in deep trouble at 43 for 4 off 21 overs.

It didn’t get much better for Langley Mill as a steady fall of wickets without the score increasing left the Millers with a mountain to climb.

Sajendra Thimal threatened to dig in but could only muster 15 along with Jeff Wharton who finished 15 not out.

No-one else managed double figures as Langley Mill folded for 72 all out with Will Harvey the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 3 after Clifton had rotated the bowling.

With so little on the board Langley Mill knew they needed to take early wickets but this was not to be and Clifton knocked the required runs inside 16 overs for the loss of one wicket with Matt Wilson top scoring with 31 not out.

Rhisman Ahmed was not out at the other end on 28 not out. Wharton picking up the solitary wicket of Wooliscroft for 16.

The Millers are at home to Tutbury this Saturday and will be looking to bounce back from three poor batting displays.

The most recent encounter between these two sides was in the Marston’s Trophy two years agao when Langley Mill pulled off the shock of the round by beating them.

It maybe a little different next week unless the Millers knuckle down.

Start time 1.30pm.
