Matt is fine form

Alfreton Cricket Club 1sts enjoyed mixed fortunes at the weekend as they moved top of Division One but crashed out of the Premier T20 Cup.

On Saturday, Ambergate were the visitors and were put in to bat first, getting off to a great start thanks to an 84-run opening stand.

Paul Thompson (27) was the first to fall at the hands Matt Lineker, with Adam Bannister soon to follow as he was bowled for 0 by Alex Mace.

After that, Lineker ripped through the middle order and, with the help of Stuart McRobert (2-34) restricted Ambergate to 136-7.

Only a late flourish from Shazad Ahmed (22) and Matt Ball (16*) saw the visitors post a challenging total of 180-8, Lineker ending with figures of 4-37.

In reply, Alfreton lost Tom Bentley for 0 to Ahmed before Liam Wallace removed Mace to leave the score on 47-2.

It was 49-3 soon after when Ryan Bramwell fell for 32 and then Wallace returned to dismiss Andy Gwatkin for 11.

That was the last of Ambergate’s wickets though as Lineker (75*) and John Aspinall (46*) guided Alfreton to a six-wicket win.

On Sunday, Alfreton faced Sandiacre and went down to an agonising last over defeat.

Batting first, Alfreton’s batsmen struggled to get starts ,other than Saturday’s star Matt Lineker who went on to get 81*, including seven fours and three sixes, setting Alfreton up for a total of 134-4.

For a long period of the chase, that total seemed to be too much for Sandiacre as they lost regular wickets and found themselves on 96-6.

However, quickfire knocks from captain Daniel Wheeldon (25) and Ryan McFadyean (35*) saw their team over the line with a ball to spare.

This weekend, Alfreton travel to Marehay in a clash of the top two sides in the Division.
