Hundreds expected to attend league reunion

PLAYERS and officials from the Belper area will be among hundreds attending what can only be described as the football reunion to top them all.

A massive 2011 Grand Reunion for anyone who has either played in or officiated in the Alfreton and District Sunday Football League, which recently celebrated it’s 40th anniversary, is being held on Sunday, June 12.

The venue is Lumb Farm on the outskirts of Ripley and the event kicks-off at 2pm, running right through to 10.30pm.

The later finish will allow for the cricketing fraternity, so it doesn’t matter what time you turn up, there is almost certainly going to be someone there you will know from the league down the years.

The Alfreton Sundy League has attracted membership of teams down the years from regions as far afield as Belper, Ambergate, Heage, Matlock, Wirksworth, Alfreton, Swanwick, Chesterfield, Ilkeston, Giltbrook, Eastwood and numerous others down the years so memories will be plentiful.

Past players from clubs Belper way who have already committed themselves to attending are John Beard, Carl Butt and Peter Butt, Steve Phillips (Lord Nelson, Welcome Tavern, George), Cyril Smith (Stevensons Fabric Dyers 1970s),

There have been numerous teams from the Belper area down the years including Belper Oberon, RJN, Lord Nelson amongst others.

Every single player, club and match official, referees, sponsors and even supporters who have been involved in any capacity since the league was first formed in 1968 are invited and welcome to attend.

The event will be a great chance to meet up and talk football with former team-mates and even opponents and referees!

Some other players attending who will be well-known to players and officials throughout the area are Kev O’Kine, Kev Jackson, Andy Jackson, Paul Jackson, Gerry Moran and Gordy Toft (all Archway 84), John Ashton, Andrew and Neil Doxey, Kieron Egan and Chris Robinson (Somercotes Crown Inn), referee Malc Gratton, Colin Higton, Shaun Hopkinson, Tigger Langton (Jacksdale), Loz Phillips (Derwent, Pinxton Miners Arms, etc), Tony Lowe and the Walters clan from Swanwick Villa and numerous others.

The emphasis of event is firmly of a family-orientated fun day with families encouraged and welcome to attend as there will be something for everyone.

Included on the day will be a hog roast, barbecue, bouncy castle and other rides for children, licensed bar throughout and fund raising events in aid of local charities including the Stan Brewster Memorial tournament with some excellent prizes available.

The organiser is also inviting everyone who is attending to email in to and confirm their name, team(s) played for and the approximate era if known.

This will also help with catering arrangements on the day.

These details will be added to an ‘attending list’ which will be continually updated until the day of the event so everyone can look and see who will be there.

The ‘Who is attending’ page can be viewed on the official Alfreton Sunday League reunion page at:

The website also includes a Forum and Guest Book for former players and officials to leave messages and catch up with each other before the big day.
