Matt Higginbottom has signed an incremental contract with Derbyshire County Cricket Club for the 2014 season.

The Cricket Derbyshire Academy graduate made his LV= County Championship debut in Derbyshire’s nine-wicket victory over Sussex in August.

In three Division One appearances, the 23-year-old claimed ten wickets at a shade over 35, including season-best figures of 3-59 in the win over Middlesex at the County Ground.

He was also named Second XI Player of the Year after claiming 32 wickets at 20.50 apiece in all competitions for Stephen Stubbings’s side.

Higginbottom joins fellow Academy graduate Ben Slater in signing an incremental contract for the upcoming campaign.

The opening batsman played ten matches and scored 335 runs in his first top-flight season, hitting three half-centuries including an unbeaten 66 in the victory over Sussex at Hove.

Head coach Karl Krikken said: “Despite tight budgets, we’ve worked hard to find the funds to give these youngsters another opportunity next season. Both broke into the four-day side last year and did very well. They have shown potential for performing at first-class level and hopefully they can continue to develop.”

He added: “It’s great that we can offer contracts to two talented youngsters from our Academy as our commitment to giving young cricketers a chance continues.

“Both have the opportunity to continue their progressions with the Club in 2014 as well as hopefully having a real impact as we aim for a successful year.”
