Heanor’s best of season gains sweet revenge

East Midlands Counties

Barrow Town 1

Heanor Town 3

HEANOR’S best performance of the season gained revenge for a ‘double’ Barrow recorded over the Lions which ruined their title chances last season.

The reason for this performance; undoubtedly a splendid playing surface.

There were a number of records for this game. Phil Austin celebrated his 50th first team appearance with a great performance until he was injured just before the break.

It was the 50th win under the management of Hopkins and Kirkwood. And it was the first time since the War at least that Heanor have had a father and son combination in their first team as new signing Neil Grayson combined with son Ashley.

Sparkling Heanor were a goal up in eight minutes. Neil Grayson was brought down and Graham Wells’ trusty left foot found the bottom corner from just outside the penalty area.

Adam Wilcox turned an Ash Grayson thunderbolt over the bar before ‘Daddy’ NEIL GRAYSON marked his debut with a splendid headed second goal from Phil Austin’s 28th minute cross.

Carl Adams saw his 32nd minute shot saved by Mark Frost, Barrow’s first effort of the game.

Phil Austin limped out of the game two minutes before the break with a slight pull and on the stroke of half time Graham Wells might have got his second of the game but he headed over when well placed.

Neil Grayson’s 59th minute headed pass saw Nathan Benger about to score when he was brought down by Josh Stevenson, but Heanor’s leading scorer dusted himself down and scored comprehensively from the spot.

Heanor looked comfortable but Chris Adams did very well in a busy penalty area to ride three tackles and clip home a 70th minute consolation for Barrow.

Substitute Dan Williams saw his 25-yard lob beat everyone but the ball hit the post and was cleared, and another lob, this time from Benger, was inches over as Heanor completed a comfortable and comprehensive victory.

Heanor: Mark Frost, Lee Stevenson, Phil Auston (Mark Littlewood 43), Ryan Cancellara, Brett Peel, Nico Degirolamo, Jimmy Gee-Pemberton, Ash Grayson, Nathan Benger, Neil Grayson (Dan Williams 77), Graham Wells. Subs not used: Dave Moon, Jake Vernon, Danny O’Donnell.

Star Lion: Jimmy Gee-Pemberton – his best game for the club yet.
