Getting ready for season

Alfreton Cricket Club was among the local clubs taking part in the latest NatWest CricketForce event.

The club has, for over ten years, particpated in NatWest Cricket Force weekends.

The event is used to provide a focus for activities in support of preparations for the start of each season.

The day involved club and public volunteers undertaking many tasks to prepare the pitches, outfield, pavilion building cleaning, fence repairs and ensuring all mowing machines started. These activities covered the club’s main ground at Alfreton Park and the second ground at Alfreton Grange school.

Committee member Matt Spencer said: “35 volunteers came along and carried out work such as checking the equipment and facilities, so it’s all sparkling for the season. We checked the square, cut the grass and generally prepared thoroughly.”

Matt, who is also assistant groundsman added: “Obviously, it’s been a bad winter in terms of the weather and I would estimate we are probably three weeks behind where we normally are, so a concentrated period of work such as this is vital. It’ll be tight but we’ll be ready for the new season and our big push will have played a big part in that.

The club also took the opportunity to unveil an artist’s impression of its proposed new pavilion building. This was unveiled by Amber Valley MP Nigel Mills and Derbyshire county councillor David Wilson. There will be further news on this new developoment in the coming weeks.

The club also wishes to thanks its main sponsors Impact Marketing & Publicity and Alfreton Town Council for their continued support of the club this season.

On the field, the club is delighted to welcome back former Derbyshire opener Matt Lineker, who will also be playing Minor Counties cricket.

Other new recruits to the first team are John Aspinall, Mark Stokes, Tom Bentley and Adam Burton (the latter two rejoining the club).

Rob Swallow is also rejoining Alfreton CC after a spell at Mansfield Hosiery Mills. Rob has been a leading cricketer in the Derbyshire Cricket League for a number of years and is a welcome addition to the club.

This year, the first team will play in Derbyshire County League Division One, the 2nd in Division 5N, and the 3rds in Division 7N. The Sunday senior team will play in section four of the Mansfield and District Cricket League. There will also be under 15s, 13s and 12s teams plus a Kwik Cricket side for under 11s.
