Sports see off Lea Holloway

THE Manor Pharmacy Matlock and District Football League saw some teams seeing action in the Invitation Shield last weekend.

Matlock Sports made a fantastic start as Callam Lytham sored in the opening three minutes from a tight angle to give his side a one-goal lead against AFC Lea Holloway.

Holloway hit back straight away and scored an equaliser just two minutes later which showed their intent but it was Matlock who took the game by the scruff of the neck and started bossing the match.

Sports started playing with flair and ambition and it was play-maker Ben Harrison’s twisting and turning which provided Craig Walters with a fine ball on the left touchline who then took the ball, looked up, and inch perfectly lobbed the keeper to score a stunning goal and give Sports a 2-1 lead after 17 minutes.

With more pressing football and some silky skills Sports fired home a third just before half time, Tom Evans firing home with a superb headed goal after a Lytham cross.

The second half saw Holloway come out with the bit between their teeth.

Just two minutes in their determination paid off when Holloway forced a rare error in the Matlock rearguard and they gave away a needless penalty which Gareth Lewis duly despatched to give Holloway some hope at 2-3.

Matlock rerouped with Harrison and Tom Evans taking control of the midfield battle, Curtis Birchall and Jack Johnson dealing with anything the home side had to offer down the wings.

With Holloway feeling the pressure Matlock took full advantage and scored two quick goals to take control of the tie.

The fourth goal came from Lytham on 80 minutes and the fifth from Talbot.

Matlock now take on local rivals Hurst Farm United in the quarter-finals.

Shirland MW failed to win their Cavendish Cup semi-final against Chesterfield Town.

Missing six first team players, Shirland succumbed to late goals as Chesterfield went on to win 5-1 and they will now face Hopflower in the final on May Day Bank Holiday (7th) at Matlock Town FC’s ground with a 7.30pm kick-off.
