Sports are out of the league cup

Holbrook Sports lost 2-0 on Saturday at home to Bardon Hill in this rearranged league cup game.

They started with five changes. Simon Lillie returned in goals, Kane Jellyman in defence, both widemen were changed due to illness so Cory Bowler and Albashir Kauri started, and Rob Fretwell came in up front.

Holbrook started slowly but with lots of possession. However, Bardon were looking very dangerous on the break.

On 20 minutes, Bardon made Holbrook pay and a quick break from Carl Benson saw him too easily get past the Holbrook defence and lay the ball for the Bardon skipper to slot home.

Bardon should have made it two shortly after but a great double save from Simon Lillie kept the at bay.

The second half saw Holbrook come out with more fight but they rarely threatened the Bardon goal. Manager Paul Romney made three changes, bringing on Lee Mitchell, Sam Ridgard, and Vaughn Hallsworth.

Sam Ridgard’s pace immediately looked to have changed the game with a great run and cross falling to Cory Bowler who inexplicably blasted high and wide.

On 75 minutes, Simon Lillie pulled off a spectacular save but five minutes he later could do nothing as a defensive error in the six-yard box allowed Bardon to double the lead.

Holbrook’s misery continued when with five minutes to go, Silva Bockarie was sent off for an off-the-ball incident.

After the game, Paul Romney said: “It looked like a hangover from our last few weeks today.

“We never got started but we will try and put it right on Wednesday night against Radford. We haven’t become a bad team overnight. All the managers and coaches know we are still a work in progress but believe we have the right set of players and we will concentrate on moving up the league to a more realistic position.”
