Ripley town slumped to a second heavy defeat at promotion-chasing Matlock United on Saturday.
Ripley knew that only a win here would keep their own promotion hopes alive and they started brightly.
Matching their opponents early on and playing some encouraging football, town took the lead after 15 minutes when Jordan Fahey bravely headed in at the near post.
The lead was however short-lived and the equaliser came from another header from Matlock’s giant of a centre-half.
The hosts soon took the lead as they carved Ripley open down the left flank for a superb goal.
Lewis Parkin then put a great chance to equalise wide of the post as Ripley still made chances.
But better was to come from Matlock as a brilliant 30 yarder screamed in off a post.
A soft fourth just before the break made it a tough task for Ripley to get back in the game.
Ripley shuffled things round at the break and Harry illife and Kieran Weightman were introduced, but Ripley continued to be wasteful in front of goal and were again shown that finishing wins games as Matlock added two more goals.
This Saturday Ripley have no league fixture, but host Swanwick Pentrich Road Reserves in a friendly at the Nottingham Road ground.
