David Hodgson fired a stunning hat-trick on Saturday to send Ripley Town into the Midlands Regional Alliance Junior Cup semi finals.
Hodgson’s goals proved the difference between the two sides in this seven-goal local derby thriller at the Nottingham Road playing fields.
In a fiery encounter, the home side went ahead in the first minute when Hodgson’s penalty was saved by Swanwick goalkeeper Craig Rodgers, but the Town striker poked home the loose ball.
Ripley were 2-0 up on the half-hour mark when Dan Cummings’s wicked free kick found its way home.
On the stroke of half-time, Dean Owen reduced the arrears with a fine goal for Swanwick.
Ripley stoked up the pressure after the break and a delightful cross from Ripley’s skipper Matt Johnstone was dispatched in style by the lively Hodgson.
His hat-trick came courtesy of an amazing 35-yard lob.
Jimmy Hassell went close to adding to the total and substitute Dan Bunting hit a post for Ripley, but Swanwick rallied in the latter stages and rattled the hosts with two late goals.
The first was a delightful free-kick from Richard Jeffries while a Craig Riley own goal gave the visitors hope, but in the end it was Ripley who earned a place in the semi final.
