Heanor Town’s positive start to the season continued on Saturday when they earned a 2-0 win at Garforth Town.
The victory kept them in the top two of the Northern Counties East League Premier Division following the weekend’s round of matches.
Ross Henshaw came into the defence for his debut for the Lions and turned in an impressive performance.
Gary Ricketts scored his third goal of the season when opening the scoring for the Lions on 14 minutes.
Henshaw’s pass out to Courey Grantham resulted in a dangerous cross that the veteran striker was able to get on the end of and powerfully head the ball home.
This lead was then doubled by Courey Grantham five minutes into the second half when Ricketts returned the favour and set up the young striker for a goal of his own.
The Lions were due to play at Athersley Recreation in the league last night (Wednesday) after the News went to press, before they travel to Spalding United in the FA Cup.
That game will be Heanor’s third away match in a row, although that is nothing compared to the start of last season, when the Lions had seven away matches in succession.
They then follow it up with another match on the road, at Liversedge on Saturday, September 6, before returning to the Town Ground for a League Cup game, which will be against Garforth Town on Tuesday, September 9.
As for the Reserves, they have only played one game so far in the Central Midlands League Reserves Supreme Division.
They lost 2-0 at the hands of Dunkirk and will next be in action on Saturday when they make the short journey to take on hosts Holbrook Sports Reserves.
Their first home game of the season is on Saturday, September 6, when Graham Street Prims Reserves are the visitors, for a match that will kick off at 3pm.
Finally, the Heanor Town Development Squad is involved in the FA Youth Cup and will play against Grantham Town in the Preliminary First Round.
The game will be played at the Town Ground, on Wednesday, September 24, with a 7.45pm kick off.
