Calverton MW Reserves 2 Heanor Town Reserves 1

Calverton MW, sitting in mid-table, inflicted a defeat on the young Lions and the 2-1 scoreline sadly flattered Heanor, in this Central Midlands League Reserve Supreme Division encounter, writes Stan Wilton.

On four minutes, a poor free-kick by Mitchell Palmer allowed Ben Horton to put the visitors under pressure but Palmer made up for his mistake. Calverton’s pressure paid off and Joe Warner dispossessed Aiden Shaw to shoot them ahead after 18 minutes.

On the half-hour mark, Heanor went further behind when Jake Davis failed to clear and Callum Moss punished them further by heading in.

Joe Warner rattled the bar two minutes from the interval with virtually no threat from Heanor. After the break, the Lions went close when Dan Storer shot from an acute angle but was narrowly wide, and Andreas Kokkinou forced home custodian Liam Bouges into a good save on 50 minutes. Calverton regained control but were guilty of missing chances, but came close when Ash Pearson cleared off the line.

Substitute Aaron Thawley did breathe new life into Heanor towards the end and the Lions pressed hard but their only reward came when Thawley pulled a goal back when Shaw fed Callum Hood down the right and he converted the cross by smashing the ball into the top corner.

TEAM: Pickworth, Shaw, Davis, Bradley, Palmer M (Pearson 27), Barber, Kokkinou, Hood, Henrys, Knifton (Thawley 65), Storer (Duerdon 51).
