Rangers are pulling clear

LEAGUE football returned to the Manor Pharmacy Matlock & District Football League with Shirebrook Rangers opening up a four-point gap at the top of division one after a 2-1 win over Woodthorpe Rovers.

Even though nothing is ever won in November, a win against a Woodthorpe side who are in fine form, shows the rest of the league that Shirebrook are real contenders.

Elsewere, Hopflower FC continue to show their strengths with a convincing 5-0 win over Miners Arms which moved them into fourth place in the league only five points off the pace.

Last year’s league champions Hilcote United got a much-needed three points after beating Laburnum Saints 2-1 in what was a tight affair while All Inn took all three points in style after thrashing Darley Dale Lions 7-1.

In Solar Press Division Two, South Wingfield got back to winning ways with a comfortable 4-1 victory over AFC Lea Holloway.

Man of the match winner Chris Saunders started the scoring with top goalscorer Jay Miles adding two more but it was super sub Darren Kelsall who scored by far the best goal of the game, producing a wonderful finish from ten yards after a flowing end to end move involving six players.

Holloway did get a consolation goal back with the last kick of the game, Dave Parker scoring.

Other action saw title-chasing Codnor Miners held to a 2-2 draw by Hurst Farm United.

Codnor were down to ten men for the last 30 minutes but hung on for a draw thanks to keeper and man of the match winner Will Marriott.

Codnor’s Ben Craig opened the scoring on 15 minutes, heading in from a corner at the far post and this lead lasted until the 44th minute when Hurst Farm drew level after scoring from the penalty spot.

The goal of the game came on 50 minutes when Tomn Hawkins smashed a 20 yard volley into the net to restore Codnor’s lead.

Ten minutes later Matt Craig received his second yellow card of the match and Codnor were down to ten men.

Hurst Farm equalised ten minutes from time but it was several fine saves from Codnor’s Will Marriott which kept the scores level.

In the last two games of the weekend, Chesterfield Town Reserves got torn apart by Wirksworth Albion who won 7-0 and Riddings Rovers beat Tansley 2-1.
