Lions bosses unhappy with work rate

JOINT Heanor Town manager Glenn Kirkwood promised changes to the team for last night’s visit of Borrowash Victoria to the Town Ground in the Second Round of the Derbyshire FA Senior Cup.

“We will be hoping to bring in another new player but we shall still have a strong team out and will be looking to progress in the competition,” he said.

Neither were the Heanor management very happy with last Saturday’s performance against St Andrews.

“We didn’t work hard enough” continued Kirkwood. “It all starts from the front two. Too many of our players were off it and only Nico Degirolamo and Gary Webster looked up for the game.

“We were flat all over and there didn’t seem too much enthusiasm amongst the players to want to play.”

However, whilst it was considered two points dropped rather than one won, the players, who have performed magnificently so far this season, can, perhaps, be excused for one day off.

Saturday’s game provided the club with their best home league gate of the season and also was significant for two more anniversaries. Lee Stevenson made his 150th appearance for the club, magnificent service indeed. And he was presented with the customary bottle of bubbly prior to the kick off by Carol Turner, one of the club’s major sponsors.

And Brett Peel was making his 50th appearance for the club in the game which also saw the debuts of Stefan Frost and Ricky Gardner.

Frost, an Australian by birth I am led to understand, was with Notts County as a youngster before having a spell with Matlock Town where he suffered a severe broken leg. After that he has been with Boston United, Quorn and Rainworth Miners Welfare.

Ricky Gardner is on loan from Carlton Town and the midfielder showed some nice touches in his 55-minute run last Saturday but is lacking fitness.

The first team have a rearranged East Midlands Counties League game on Saturday at Radcliffe Olympic (3pm) whilst the Reserves are at home to Mickleover Sports Reserves in the Second Round of the Derbyshire FA Divisional Cup (South) also with a 3pm start.

There are no midweek games for either side next week.
